Why proactive is bad for you ♡

♥ Why its popular
I've said a couple of times on my various social media sites that proactiv is bad for your skin and tons of people keep asking me why, so I thought this would be a very informative blog post for those of you struggling with acne, and those of you who are victims of proactiv. First of all, the main reason why they are so popular is because of their various commercials featuring celebrities with perfect airbrushed looking skin. This alone should be an indication that its a waste of money. The only reason celebrities are doing these commercials is because they are getting paid thousands and thousands of dollars to say a few words and be pictured with a bottle of proactiv. Celebrities have dermatologists that take care of their skin for them. They definitely don't use what they are advertising.

♥ Whats actually in it
Proactiv features many chemicals that are terrible for your body. Chemicals you don't want on your skin at all, let alone your face. I have read numerous stories of how proactiv actually bleached their towels and pillow covers, thats a pretty huge indication that something is WAY too harsh for your skin.  When you use proactiv, it basically drys out your skin as much as it can. This is terrible because your skin needs natural oils to rejuvenate itself. Not all oils on your skin are bad! Since your skin is so dry obviously, break outs are less common. But, at what cost? Drying out your skin in that kind of way can be really bad for you in the long run, causing acne scars, premature aging, skin flaking, pealing, and redness. These are all things we are trying to run away from, so its confusing as to why proactiv is so popular right? Well like I said before, they make their commercials very, very convincing. There are so many people who are misinformed about acne products and what they are actually putting on their face.

Heres a breakdown of some of the major ingredients in proactiv:

Benzoyl peroxide: This is a very common ingredient in a lot of acne medications, although, if your skin is already damaged and you have some scarring, or some pimples here and there it can be dangerous for your skin. Benzoyl works by destroying oil and bacteria under your skin (this is where the dryness comes from) There is also a debate that it can even increase your risk of cancer. Proactiv actually uses this ingredient in their moisturizer. That makes no sense for a moisturizer to contain an ingredient that is meant to dry out your face.

♥ Sulfur: Another common ingredient for acne products. Sulfur is basically meant to dry out your skin (with all that benzoyl all you need is more drying -__-) if used on open acne or any kind of breakage on the skin, sulfur can cause acne scars and make things thousands of times worse. Sulfur is really high on the pH scale which encourages the growth of bacteria on your skin.

♥ Zinc oxide: This ingredient is commonly used in sunscreens. This is yet, ANOTHER product in proactiv that is debated to cause cancer. This ingredient has also been shown to whiten skin, and bleach things.

there are a lot of chemicals in proactive other than these three, but these are the main ingredients that are found in all of their products, I also wanted to share these things with you so you can be a little more knowledgeable about whats in your acne products.

♥ Overview
If something burns, irritates, bleaches, or drys out your skin, chances are you shouldn't be using it. There are people who argue against people who think proactive doesn't work, because the honest truth is, that it does work for some people, but like I said before, in the long run it will hurt your skin way more than you were anticipating. The second you stop spending money on their products, your acne comes back. This is how they get you. They want to make it seem like you need proactiv for your acne to calm down, when in all reality, you want to be using a product that is healing you, not just pausing something. Using chemicals after chemicals on your skin isn't going to heal you, its going to hurt you. Now, with all that being said, if you use proactiv, and love it then by all means keep using it if thats what you want, but be warned of all of the bad things that it contains, if you have not used it before and are considering using it, I would 100% recommend not to. I actually asked you guys to help me out with this review! If you would like to read what some of my followers have to say about proactiv and their experiences with it click here

  1. This is by far one of the best posts you've made. I believe that it's always best to use more natural ingredients. It's also helpful to do simple things like drink water, wash your pillow cases and blankets at least once a week, and not touching your face so much. Changing your eating habits helps as well. There are SO many things you can do instead of using all those harsh chemicals on your skin. Thanks April.

    6. Try STOPPING proactiv or their more expensive line Rodan & Fields. I stopped and my skin is ruined. I am more broken out after stopping than I have ever been on my entire life. I am devastated and embarrased. I want to hear from other women who have suffered as I have. Not only is the line SEVERELY OVERPRICED, if you stop your face will be 100 times worse.

    7. I used Proactiv for 6 years and was very diligent about sticking to the routine. Proactiv worked for me and I didn't have one pimple for those 6 years. Having said this, I would NOT RECOMMEND Proactive to ANYONE. I decided to stop using it because of the chemicals and harsh ingredients used. After I stopped using it, my pores felt like they could finally BREATHE. But like the above people, my skin blew up when I stopped and I had cystic acne all over my face, way worse than I had ever had before using Proactiv. I had to go on Accutane, which is a much harsher acne treatment and something I did not want to be on, but I had to do something about the painful acne. My acne is gone now but I still have a few scars here and there. That is my experience with Proactiv and I hope that helps some of you who are deciding whether or not to use it.

    8. I had the Same experience. I used proactiv for years and a few months ago I decided I wanted to Stop and find a more organic healthy way to cleanse my skin. I brought out but not badly. Well I was upset with my one ugly huge zit every week and I made the worst decision and went back on proactiv. I broke out horribly all around my chin and jawline and now scars throughout my face. My face has never looked like this before. I ruined my skin by deciding to try this product out again.

    10. I had the same experience with Proactiv. It works great, but when it dawns on you that the harsh chemicals are not good for you and you want to quit...LOOK OUT!!! I quit because my skin started to have the cysts, more dryness, red marks, etc. I didn't do anything different other than what I regularly did with Proactiv. After being happy (or so I thought) with Proactiv...my skin was sending me a message to quit, take a break, try something new or whatever. I reluctantly quit and my acne was the worst ever. It was hard not to run out and get more to stop the pain and madness of the breakout. I got headaches due to the massive breakout on my forehead just a few days after stopping. I don't want to ever experience that pain again. I felt like I could relate to junkies...I was hooked on Proactiv. I too tried to stop Proactive several times over the years and found myself going back to get more like I was hooked on drugs or something. Bottomline, it does work, but my goodness...at what price are you paying for your healthy skin and the side affects you may not see for years to come? I wish I had never used it, but at the time my breakouts were so bad and my self-esteem was low due to the acne. I felt like I found the Jeanie in a bottle, but it's just not. I used "Exposed Skin" to help wean myself after about 2-3 weeks of pain. This is chemicals too, but not as bad and helped me. It is a good product, but again...be careful with anything long term. I have stopped this too. I am now dealing with a pimple here and there with just using water to clean my face. But its better than dealing with harsh chemicals, the addiction, the massive breakouts or whatever. I have now been approached by several friends wanting me to try Roden & Fields...hello!...they are the creators of Proactiv. But the push is..."they are different"...really? Other than a bigger price tag I fail to see the difference...the ingredients look the same and the 3 step process is still there...etc., etc., etc. I have my doubts. I feel like I am in a good place now dealing with a little something here and there...it has been a long road though. Also, when I got off Proactiv and had the massive breakout...it left dark marks that I now have to deal with. I recently read an article about the women in Africa with no clean water etc. who we think should have bad skin from not washing actually have beautiful skin. So...why bother putting anything on our skin...especially your face? Everyone is different and there is no "one size fits all". I suppose if you are happy with using Proactiv, etc...Roden & Fields, whatever...press on. Just keep the experiences of others in mind so you can make an informed decision.

    14. YEARS before ProActive became so popular, actually PRoActive modeled their products after Anti Acne products created by Jennifer Flavin-Stallone ( Yes she is Sylvester Stallone's wife ) JFS is the Co-Founder of Serious Skin Care, and Serious Skin Care has a line of products, 3 pcs for Anti Acne called "Continuously Clear" a 3 pc Anti Acne System and it can be purchased on HSN. Serious Skin Care's "Continuously Clear Trio" was the FIRST " Anti Acne 3 pc System " and is less expensive than it is on the " Seriousskincare.com " web site. NOW As far as washing pillow cases and sheets, I had heard this as a part of trivia on some TV show as it was going to commercial....the question was " On average, how many times does the average man wash/ change his bed sheets...answer TWICE a year...!!! YUCK...!!! I Change mine every 7-9 days. Anyway I Hope my post about Serious Skin Care's "Continuously Clear's Trio " and where it can be found and purchased will be of help for at least ONE person...Thanks for reading...!!! 2. You can think what you like, but the chemicals in proactiv (and many cosmetics that the FDA approve of) are carcinogenic (cancer causing) and can cause pre-mature aging of the skin. Proactiv may work to clear your acne and keep it at bay for the time being, but the second you try to quit, you'll soon realize the damage that it has done to your skin. The reason you breakout badly when you stop using it is because it destroys the protective layer of bacteria and oil on your skin that is your body's natural defense from the outside world. Further more, to comment on what you said about the chemicals being no more harmful than your deodorant or handsoap, hence why it's "literally complete and utter stupidity" to not use it because of chemicals, is an uninformed accusation, implying that she promotes chemical ridden deodorants and handsoaps. Most of us who promote one natural beauty method, promote them all. So unlike you and the millions of other misinformed persons on the internet, she most likely does the research and avoids deodorants containing aluminum (cancer causing and Alzheimer causing) and other chemicals that are proven to be harmful. As for the pointed attacks at her, and anyone who agrees, intelligence in context of argument, that my friend is known as ad hominem and is fallacious in nature. (Fallacious meaning flawed on not on point with the concerns and points that you're trying to make.) Improve on your argument skills and read up on the harm that approved chemicals can do.

p.s Keep in mind that the FDA also approves of the use of rat poisoning as preservatives in food. Don't believe all that you hear.

    3. Wow, I wanted to start using Proactive, because of my acne, and all those convincing commercials. I am only 12, and before I was even going to buy it, I wanted to do some research to find anything that would ruin my skin even more.I currently use Clean & Clear; which hasn't made a difference. I had the every day facial wash, the acne removing one, and now I am currently using the night and morning one. All this does, it basically dries my skin out. So, I am so grateful that I did some research before putting these harmful chemicals on my face. Thank you very much :)

  5. Coming from someone who has tried proactiv:

    I tried proactiv about two years ago for one month only and stopped using it because I did not have the time to keep buying more. In my personal opinion (with the month that I used proactiv), proactiv did take away the vast majority of my acne, however since I did not continue it, obviously it wasn't getting treated and obviously my acne was still on my face. The only bad side about proactiv that I have to say is that it was a bit too harsh on my face and it did dry out my face from time to time. I wasn't a huge fan of it, seeing that I just was aching for a soft, porcelain, clear face. I started buying St. Ives and Olay facial washes, which worked tremendously, let me tell ya! I believe switching to organic products is a lot better than using harsh chemicals on your face. Although proactiv did work for me, I do not personally recommend using it simply because of its chemicals. As of right now, I am using DIY facial washes and Olay, although I wish I had the money to spend on a Lush facial wash, but this will definitely be in my wish list. Maybe one day.;o;

  8. I think that you are leaving out vital information. For one, having severe acne is a MEDICAL CONDITION, that you need to see a doctor for. No OTC or natural remedies are going to help you with hormone imbalances and skin disorders. Always consult a doctor about medical issues. I can't believe you would let people solely rely on you. Yes, people should have the common sense to know to consult a doctor, but not everyone does and I think that the fact that you didn't include any information about seeing a dermatologist is obscene and dangerous.

I have very sensitive skin and my dermatologist worked with me on a regiment of antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide foams that were not harsh or overdrying for my skin. Not all benzoyl peroxide is bad. I don't think you should be prescribing this sort of information to people, especially vulnerable young girls when you are not a dermatologist nor consulted one.

    2. Lol are you fucking stupid? This post comes up on Google. That person is saying she shouldn't be spreading misinformation based on her own biased misunderstandings of those ingredients, or giving direction on how to properly treat a condition, when she isn't a licensed professional. Most of her info is actually wrong and it can just make the problem worse for people with severe acne who should be seeing a dermatologist.

She can post whatever she wants in her blog shes already stated its her own opinion. Common sense should tell ya if you have horrible acne obviously go to the damn doctor dont rely on blogs!

  10. I love your blog and you are my idol but I have a few to say
Benzoyl peroxide isn't that bad. With my sensitive, combination/mainly dry, acne prone skin, my dermatologist prescribed me a benzoyl peroxide face wash. Yes it does dry out your skin, and that is the purpose of it, you dry out your skin so you can penetrate the acne at the source.
And I agree with that Amber Ebygirl above, you are leaving out important information and you really shouldn't try to self-treat your acne. You aren't a dermatologist and most of your information (which I am guessing) is researched from the Internet.

About natural products, if you have a slight amount of acne, you should use them. Acne is a medical condition, and just like viruses- it is constantly becoming immune to some treatments so it is much better to see an actual dermatologist instead of self-treating your acne.
And most natural skin products don't do a whole bunch for your skin. Like my skin for example.

    2. You say it's your opinion, but you treat these like these are facts. It doesn't say, "tips on how to treat acne with natural remedies," it clearly states why specifically Proactiv is terrible. Sorry it didn't do anything for you, but it does for a Hell of a lot of people. It doesn't dry out everyone's skin to the point of problems. You should use a moisturizer/sunscreen combo of the non-acne-treatment variety anyway after washing your face regardless of dryness level. Using lotion is in fact typically part of the recommended directions on almost all acne products that I have tried. If a product dries your skin out to the point of irritation, you use it once every other day or once a week instead of every day. Most people also build up tolerance to the things that dry out the skin and it become less irritating after the first few uses. Like someone stated before, this does show up on google. Then again, so do some other legitimate sources stating that BPO is completely safe in the amounts used in acne medication. I believe (note the word indicating my own personal theory) perhaps the danger comes from people, again, not moisturizing afterwards and going out into the harsh sunlight while the skin is more sensitive.

      Delete
    3. Actually, Proactive does indeed dry everyone's face out. That's what it is designed to do, and that is why it "works". It is also why you erupt so much when you stop, you're skin is trying to heal and regulate itself. You should never try to "build up a tolerance" to something that is irritating. All that does is cause more harm to the face. While certain amounts of BPO are ok, it is not right for everyone, it's as simple as that.

  11. I'm kind of confused by this post, because you list three of the most common ingredients in a lot of acne treatments, as you admit, but then say that this is the best information about proactiv you could give to deter someone from using it... Wouldn't it make more sense for the post to be more about drugstore/non-organic treatments in general, since there isn't any Proactiv-specific information at all?

I also agree that you should mention that if you have severe acne you should get it checked out by a dermatologist... that's some pretty vital information your readers, especially the younger ones, should know.

  13. Zinc oxide can be found in many sunscreens, and not all benzoyl peroxide products are that drying or harmful to the skin. :/ I think you should have left a small disclaimer at the beginning of your blogpost so people don't bash you.

  14. Not your best blog post. I think with a topic like this there should be some better examples as to why Proactiv is bad, and some VERY good research to back it up. This is you just posting a blog about something you've heard, and from other people's experiences. I don't think it's appropriate for you to post something like this.

& On another note, I have adult acne that's pretty bad and I tried a product from Lush you recommended, Grease Lightening, and it made be break out SO bad! It was probably one of the worse things I put on my face. So when it comes to things like acne, because it is a medical condition, you really shouldn't blog about it. Yes, this is your opinion about a product but no one is going to know what kind of acne they have before seeing a doctor.

  16. Just to give my two cents, natural treatments doesn't not work on more severe acne. I have had acne vulgaris type II (type III at some points) and I wish natural remedies worked for me. I use nothing but eco-make up and I only use pure oils (jojoba, vitamin e, almond) to moisturize my face and regularly use green tea as toner. I really want all this to work but for acne vulgaris it rarely does. Without Differin my skin would be horrible. Acne vulgaris is caused by the inflammation that starts in the pores, Differin is an antiiflammatory agent. Proactive on the other hand sucks.

  17. Just wanna give an opinion from someone who is slightly on the fence with Proactiv. I have used this product on and off for probably over 5 years now. In the last year however I have been using just Proactiv. Since I started puberty near the end of my elementary school days, I realized that acne and oily skin were going to be issues for me. I struggled for the longest time, trying everything and anything in the drugstores. I even had medically prescribed lotions from doctors, which honestly worked well when I truly think back about it. But my acne was bad enough to the point that it made me feel ugly and depressed when I saw my face in the mirror so I needed something more reliable. Proactiv, when it first became popular, looked like a miracle in a bottle to me so I obviously ordered it and tried it as soon as possible. I was in gr 9 or 10 and I think the product was either too harsh for my skin at the time or the products where just too harsh in general. It dried my skin out completely to the point where I could scratch my face and see little flakes falling from it. (EWW). I hated it. But years later I tried the products again and this time it REALLY worked! No overly dry face anymore, just clear beautiful skin. I believe that Proactiv changed their ingredients to make the product less harsh and in doing so it ended up working a lot better for my skin. They even have a sensitive skin version of the products that I have never tried but the normal ones seem to work great for me, even a year later. I honestly am not the best at washing my face morning and night. But if I am wearing makeup I have wipes that I will use to at least wipe my make up off before bed. Either way, after reading this blog post, I felt conflicted. I hear all this bad stuff about Proactiv, when in reality, it does work.. for me anyways. And like ANY OTHER skin cleansing regime, you need to be consistent with it or else your skin problems (acne) will reappear no matter what.

  18. I have been using Proactiv for just under two years now. I am 26 years old. Since I was 12, I have had TERRIBLE acne. I saw multiple dermatologists throughout my teenage years, prescribing everything under the sun. I tried pills, a plethora of creams, face washes, you name it. Nothing worked for me, at all. A couple of years ago, my boyfriend mentioned ProActiv to me, and I gave it a try.

ProActiv is the ONLY acne wash that has worked on my face, I had super clear skin. I would break out very seldom.

Throughout the past couple of months, I've been switching my diet and beauty routine to all-natural. That being said, I began researching the chemicals in ProActiv. I found the same things you have been talking about in this post. It is TERRIBLE for your skin in the long-term. I stopped it immediately and am breaking out like crazy. I have started using Desert Essence because I have heard great things about it, so I will give it a few weeks to see if it will help.

People saying that you need to go to dermatologist - NOT TRUE. They prescribed things with the same harsh chemicals that ProActiv contains. They did NOT fix my acne.

    Great post...

  19. In the past few years my acne has been acting up really bad, so I looked up natural alternatives to Proactiv. This post is exactly why I don't want to use it. The thing is, I've used many natural home made treatments, and not many help. I do drink enough water through the day though. I've been using HappyMe and I think it's great. It doesn't cost too much, it's natural, and it actually works. If anyone is looking for an alternative, there's one. Others are just way too expensive for me. Thanks for this post!!!

  21. I stumbled upon this blog while researching the aftereffects of using Proactive Solution. I am 31, and up until recently, I was using Proactive solution, and I had been using it since the age of 23.
I have had oily acne-prone skin since I was a teenager, and I had tried what felt like all skincare alternatives for acne but nothing seemed to really work. I was prescribed some pills from my docter which worked great, but they were only a six month cure and I was right back where I started when the cure was over. I then saw an add for Proactive on TV, and I ordered it expecting great things to happen. And I was not dissapointed. My skin cleared up in a matter of two weeks, and it looked amazing.
As I live in Europe, there suddenly came a time 2 years ago when they wouldn't ship it from the US to Europe anymore, so I had to stop using it for a while, and my skin went crazy. I have NEVER in my life experienced anything like it. Not even as a teenager, did I have skin this bad. I broke out all over my face, and I was completely horrified, so I found a way to have it shipped to relatives in the US, and then they could ship it to me in Europe. When I started using Proactive it again, my skin sort of normalized, but then it started to get red, irritated and inflammated and little bumps would appear on my cheeks.
So finally five weeks ago, I decided to go cold turkey and quit Proactive for good. I have so many bleeched towels and pillowcases, and as this blog says, anything that does that to a piece of fabric should really not be applied to your face. For me, and for so many others, Proactive worked where nothing else did. But at what cost? The ingredients in Proactive Solution are actually so harsh that some of them are banned as over-the-counter products in Europe, and they have thus been forced to change the formula for Proactive version available for sale in Europe. This is not advertised, but having tried both products, I know that they are not the same. The use of Benozyl peroxide in cosmetics is actually banned by the European Union, because of the dangerous and in some cases toxic chemicals associated with it in acne treatments. I was absolutely horrified to discover how many people have had trouble when quitting Proactive. The fact that your skin becomes addictive upon continual use of Benozyl peroxide really explains the reactions people are describing, and I really hope that this addiction will wear off over time.
When I quit Proactive 5 weeks ago, I decided I wanted to try an all natural and chemical-free product with no parabens, fragrance or synthetic ingredients. One of the few skin care lines out there that fulfilled my requirements was SUKI Skin Care. I purchased their Balancing series, and a few of their amplifying products for acne-prone skin. My skin has been pretty bad since I quit Pro-active and switched to SUKI. The only immediate improvement is that my skin is no longer irritated, red, inflammated and puffy. I do have a lot of impurities and blemishes. However, I have been told that this is completely normal when you switch form a synthetic product line to a natural one because your skin needs to rid it self of all the damaging ingredients form the previous product, and all the "garbage" layered in your skin will be drawn to the surface. Apparently, this "dermal detox" is just a phase that you need to go through (I really hope so). I suppose if the length of the dermal detox period is directly linked to how many chemicals and damaging ingredients were in the previously used products, I am in for quite some time before my skin clears up. I have faith that it will get better though. I have read some truely wonderfull things about SUKI products and about their clinical results, so I am staying optimistic for now. I at least feel great knowing that I am using a natural skin care regime that does not contain anything that is dangerous or damaging to my skin or my body in the long run.

  23. I used proactiv last year for back to school and a couple months in and it worked AWESOME. After that I didnt have enough money to buy it again. So I tried almost everything I could to get my acne to go away and NOTHING helped. Even the products my doctor told me to use didnt work. Today for a back to school present my aunt bought me proactiv and I just used it. My pimples are already almost gone and my skin is SUPER soft. It doesnt burn or irritate my skin AT ALL. This is a great product and is worth the cost.

  26. I've used ProActiv since 1996. I've never found it to be too harsh or drying at all. I have beautiful skin and I'm 46 and don't look like it. It works beautifully and I love the way it makes my skin look and feel.

Prior to using ProActiv, I tried just about every single thing available and nothing worked for me.

The problem - I no longer wish to put the carcinogenic chemicals on my skin (not something I was aware of before.) I'm looking for a natural alternative that actually works on acne...

  30. As someone who has spent almost 10 years with acne. I have tried everything under the sun to treat it. For over the counter, to my dermatologist, to old wiys tall. I did use proactive but because my acne was so bad I did not see improvement on my skin. How ever mind you I gave it another try and yes I have the skin I knew I was ment to have. Yes it drys your skin out that is why you ware a moisturiser when you use it. As with anything else you use it will drive you mad. You fancy product you are pushing assume you have perfect skin. If you have trouble skin go see your Dr. Do not push stuff on these people, for you do not know them or what they are going through. Stop giving false hope. You should tell them to go get help. And not to take your every world.

  34. Those chemicals you deem harmful can not penetrate deep enough to actually be absorbed into your blood stream to actually harm you. The skin is the bodies natural defense system for this reason nothing gets past the Stratum Corneum.

Acne Vulgaris is entirely a genetic disease. It is caused by a mutation in the androgen receptors that causes the oil glands to be overly sensitive to Androgens, often a regular amount, which results in massive sebum production, hyperkeratinization and inflammation.

  36. I'm having a bad reaction to benzoyl peroxide! I know this is the same stuff that is in Proactiv, at 2.5% I believe, and I'm breaking out in cystic acne. I just wrote about it, but I'm hoping that things will turn around!

I honestly didn't know about all of the negative reactions that Proactiv can cause, until I really started doing research. That's when all of the bad things really pop up. The thing is, I've read that tea tree oil is a great benzoyl peroxide alternative, and there is actually a study that proves that it works just as well as benzoyl peroxide in the long run.

I think down the road, I'm going to switch over to an all-natural means of getting rid of my acne, but for now, I think I just need to stick to a program.

If anyone else's acne is getting worse before it gets better, and you want to continue to use Proactiv, I actually read that this process is pretty normal. Here are some links:

I am going to encourage all of you to keep a log of your process. I just started journaling, and I'm really hoping that it's going to help me through this process. Anyway, good luck everyone! I'll keep you posted.

I just wanted to let you know that I definitely understand the concerns that you do have with benzoyl peroxide. I'm actually a pretty big activist on using home remedies for pretty much everything. If there is a natural way to go, I'm all for it!

I did read your blog post, about acne getting worse before it gets better, and you're spot on!

I just wanted to give you some words of encouragement, and let you know to try to stick with it! Everyone here is capable of getting clear skin, if you just keep putting in effort, and sticking to a program. Most people quit way before they should.

Once you do get clear with benzoyl peroxide, I definitely recommend trying to get clear using all natural treatments. I've also read that tea tree oil can make as a great substitute for benzoyl peroxide.

      Here's the Study I Found.

Keep up the great work, and you're going to have an amazing outcome! Please keep up with the great blog posts as well! I'm excited to read them as they continue to come. :)

This blog is good for people to read and take what information they want from it. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I also have a skin care I love from It Works global, you can all check it out and check out the ingredients if you would like by visiting wrapwithchrissy.myitworks.com our formulator had skin cancer so he created products to help the skin. Our skin is our biggest organ in our body.. you have to treat it internally and externally. What we put into our bodies or on our bodies affects everything about us. All she is saying is make informed decisions. Same with your vitamins. Doctors tell you to take vitamins but when you purchase an over the counter vitamin that is not all natural and made my synthetic products you are getting red 40, yellow 5 and yellow 6. You can actually heal your body nutriceutically versus pharmaceutically if you do your research. We have so many people listening to doctors who prescribe drugs with so many side affects that are killing people why would you not try to do something better for yourself. We only live once.. Don't be that person to say I wish I had done things differently.....

  43. The argument that Proactive is bad for you because it has chemicals and something like tea tree oil is bad for you because it is natural must be looked at more closely. Guess what, tea tree oil does the exact same thing as you described Benzoyl Peroxide and Proactive system to do as a whole. Yet one is good and the other is bad? Different skin types take different things. I was 17 when Proactive first came out, and it was the LEAST harsh of acne products on the market. In fact, believe it or not before the mass marketing campaign Proactive launched most people would think putting oil on your skin would cause more pimples, eating chocolate, yadda yadda. Ever since Rodin and Fields provided their handbook, gradually attitudes towards acne started to change and you see on the Internet people talk about oil cleansing for pimples which was unheard of before. Proactive definitely will not work for everyone. But not because of the reasons you stated. As an overall system Proactive consciously takes more pains to be as minimally drying as possible. Before Proactive department stores and commercial brand acne systems would carry 10% Benzoyl Peroxide! You started to see a big shift in that during the late 90s and now where most brands have reduced to 2.5%. Proactive also had glycolic acid in their toner and lotion. Adding that actually was a huge step in treating the skin deeper than just drying out pimples. For me it was not drying at all (back then) and actually helped myself as well as the market to set the bar higher in skin care being a complex treatment rather than just pimple drying. Tea tree oil, even when diluted actually WORSENED my skin. But yet on the Internet no one talks about how that can be a hit or miss. It is touted as something so great. Why? Because it's natural? Some people are plain allergic to it. Also, mercury is natural too. Doesn't mean it is good for us. What is good and bad for us is just as much an individual thing, not because of the "chemical" vs. "natural" argument that people all too easily (thanks to the Internet) subscribe to without any form of critical thought.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sorry, I meant Proactive set the bar higher in being a more *comprehensive* system. Not *complex.*

  45. I used ProActiv a while back and it was not a pleasant experience. My skin burned, itched, turned red. And on top of all that, it was abnormally dry [shocking because I've never had dry skin in my life].

I desperately needed something to get rid of my acne [which was located mostly on my forhead area] ... ProActiv was terrible, as I mentioned before. So I decided to buy the Citrus Clear Sensitive Kit (Face Wash & Moisturizer), and this was the best decision ever. I noticed results as soon as 2-3 days. My acne is all gone now. It's only 2 steps, whereas ProActiv was 3. My skin is great right now

  49. Take my experience for what it's worth. I used proactive for 7+ years and it worked beautifully. My skin wasn't that bad to begin with just the occasional breakout outs but nothing serious. I always got compliments on my skin even before proactive and even more while using it.
After going through lots of destroyed towels and sheets I figured how healthy could this product be for my skin if it does that to the towels. My hair also started changing color since washing my face was the last step in my routine after showering, etc.

I discontinued using proactive May of 2014. When I called proactive to discontinue my membership the rep told me to discontinue use gradually to avoid any bad reactions. Of course I didnt do that. Since then my face is in worst condition of my life. I'm still trying to find a routine that will get my skin back to normal but no luck so far. My face is now extremely sensitive to anything too strong and even some organic ingredients. My face was extreme oily the first few months after discontinuing proactive - evenghough that has improved it has been extremely hard adjusting from the girl with beautiful skin to one with scars, breakouts weekly. My face is nothing compared to what it was.

  50. Amber Emby- if you knew anything about health, you would know that blindly believing the medicine that doctors prescribe is "healthy" or "good for you" is very ignorant. Especially believin in antibiotics. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that your gut need to maintain a healthy environment. When you use antibiotics, you are ridding your stomach of anything healthy- it's killing all the good bacteria! Why do you think they give women yeast infections? Look up fermented foods and probiotics/ kombucha and get yourself some knowledge about health, girl. Doctors don't even care about chemical reactions in our body that's why it's called holistic because it's a natural and non chemical way of going about health. I bet you use dove deodorant that has anti-persperant aluminum dioxide which is KNOWN to give breat cancer. How many doctors use natural deodorant? The smart ones. They don't care. Ifor anyone is taking antidepressants or antipsychotics- have you ever read what those drugs do to your brain? Dehydrate your BRAIN! Anyway that's another matter. Hope I informed some people and provided some well-needed knowledge for some more of our world to WAKE UP! :-)

An alcohol-based products with short term acne help but long term damaging effect to your skin and whole inner-self. you nailed it when you said "WATER" your skin's OWN Moisture is the answer for any clinical issue you have w/ your skin & Anti-Aging. 61. Thank you for such an honest informative post. I felt compelled to reply. I had severe acne since I was 14. It continued throughout my twenties and even into my 30's. I had horrible breakouts all the time. I ate healthy was very active and worked out all the time. Nothing I used or tried in my skin helped. Until I found proactiv. That was in 2005. After I started using this product I saw my acne problems go away. For the first time in my life I felt confident about my looks, not ashamed or embarrassed. I still got the occasional blemish from time to time but nothing like I had before. After about 5 years I began to wonder if I could switch to something else. I knew that proactiv was harsh on the skin and I started feeling it. Two weeks into using store bought products my face started blowing up again. Of course, I went back to proactiv and my skin cleared up again. It is now 6 years after that and I never wanted to switch because I was afraid of what would happen. My skin though.. in the last year my skin has become dry, red, raw, discolored and just in general bad. I knew I had to find something else. I felt like proactiv was eating my skin away. I had been afraid to switch but I knew if I didn't it would just get worse. My mom and sister used clinique. My mom gave me a bunch of trial sets to try out for a while. I have been using the product for about 6 weeks now and I love it. I was expecting some horrible transition period but that never came. I visibly notice such a huge difference in how my face looks and feels. The redness has mostly gone away, the dryness is gone and it feels so refreshed. I am happy that I was able to stop using proactiv because honestly it felt like it was harmful but I was too afraid to switch. I would have to agree that it may be a good solution for short term use but I do not recommend it at all for long term.

I am going to stop using it , it leave me with marks and scars on my face because I pop it. I don't like when big pimples staring at me. Now, I regret using pro active. Its not cheap and it's ruining my face. Thanks guys for this review.

  63. I work for proactiv and most of this is untrue. Yes, if u stop you will break out again. Just like if u stop eating youre going to get hungry. Its medicine and is supposed to be used as such. They even tell u about the benzoyl peroxide to be careful as it will discolor fabric and if its too harsh for you to try the salicylic acid medicines as its gentler. I will say the Proactiv+ line is way gentler on skin as it moisturizes skin better. Everyones skin is different and its gonna work different on everybody. If you really dont want to use it use witch hazel and an oil free moisturizer. And for people who use proactiv and get worse u may be using too much or too often. And btw all ingredients are natural and come from natural sources. Just remember that there is too much of a good thing and everyones different.

  64. I started using this product back in 2006 and I stopped using it around 2009. My skin was so beautiful and flawless, it wasn't bad enough to use it proactive. I only decided to give it a try to rid of a few pimples that would surface around my chin. So once I stopped use of it my skin immediately started to look older and I broke out like never before. Now, mind you, I brought dang near the whole line and even took the pills. The body wash cleared the small bumps I would get on my back. But, like I said, everything changed after use of it. This product has ruined my self esteem and my dating life. The post acne marks that I get til this day are so hard to rid of. The founder of this company knows what they're doing to people's skin. That's why it's not used as a cure, it's something you have to continue to buy to maintain the results they promise which is their profit. If it was a one time clear all product, they wouldn't be able to make a profit off of this filth. I'm disgusted with the fact that people in labs cook this shit up and label it and send it off. Each year I notice the formula is changing or they've added and addition to the line to make you feel as if the product is worth the buy. I beg you, if you're considering purchasing this garbage, DON'T!!! Love and respect your temple enough to know these people are full of crap and they don't care anything about your face and the insecurities this product has brought to people's lives. There are not a few and many but thousands of people out there suffering from the aftermath of this product. I'm not fake and no i'm not being paid to post this. Stop believing the garbage the people that work for them say. They're making a profit, they can careless about the questions you ask. They're all scripted to tell you the same damn thing. My regret is allowing myself to become a victim to something I was already sceptical about. PROACTIVE PROACTIVELY RUINED MY SKIN!!!!!!

Acne is an incurable condition so if you stop using a treatment, whatever the treatment is, the acne will usually return. Many of the comments in this blog post fail to realize that proactiv is the most widely used acne treatment today because it works. Of course, everyone's skin is different so nothing will work for everyone. But to imply that proactiv can damage or Ruin skin is simply not true based on the clinical data. It may not work for everyone, but the line has skin loving natural ingredients as well as proven acne fighters (e.g. Like Benzoil peroxide).
